Charities

We have supported a number of charities in the past, more information detailed below:

Rosemary Foundation

The Rosemary Foundation offers a service, which is free of all cost to patients and carers which comprises:

  • Nurses experienced in offering hands-on palliative care
  • A counselling service for patients and those close to them
  • A rapid and flexible response to meet individual needs
  • Care that is patient based
  • Cover for seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day.

How the Rosemary Foundation works

Our service is provided by a team of qualified and experienced specialist nurses, counsellors and care assistants, supported by providers of clerical, financial and administrative services. To keep indirect costs as low as possible, staff work from their own homes, meeting regularly to discuss individual cases. The Board of Trustees and the Management Committee (with responsibility for day to day operations) also meet regularly.

Patients who are referred to us are assessed by one of our nurses, who will visit the patient and their family, and also contact other healthcare professionals involved, particularly the GP and District Nurse, to assess the type and degree of care required and how this may best be provided. A care plan is drawn up with the patient and care arranged, with one named carer appointed to take overall responsibility in each case.

Anyone may refer a patient to us, but normally it is not possible to take on the care of any patient without the agreement of their GP

Ataxia UK

In 2009 we supported Ataxia UK : www.ataxia.org.uk

'Ataxia' means ‘absence of order’. People with ataxia have problems of co-ordination. This is because parts of the nervous system that normally control co-ordination and balance are affected. Ataxia is the principal symptom of a group of neurological disorders called the cerebellar ataxias. Most are progressive.

Ataxia may also be a symptom of other conditions such as multiple sclerosis or cerebral palsy.

Ataxia UK will provide help to all people affected by ataxia, but focuses on the cerebellar ataxias. There are other organisations providing support where ataxia is a part of multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy or other conditions.

There are many different types of cerebellar ataxia. Some are inherited.

“My mother held the school sprint record for 25 years but is now unable to move from her chair without help and is totally reliant on carers.

My brother, Alan, has been South Coast Longboard surfing champion for most of the past 11 years but in a few years he could be in a wheelchair.

Each Ataxia sufferer has a 50% chance of passing it on to each of their children and Alan has 3 kids.

Knowing you have it is bad enough but not knowing if your kids do must be far worse.
Please help us to raise money to improve the future of Ataxia sufferers.”

Thanks to Gerry O'Neill Petersfield Physio & Sports injury Clinic Ltd for advice and for sponsoring us.
Thanks to White Rose Liss for helping to make sure we get there and back by servicing our car and providing petrol.

Wow, we made it!

3 thunderstorms on Ben Nevis, pouring rain and howling winds on Scafell Pike and Snowdon. But a great sense of achievement to have finished the challenge. We owe a huge thank you for all the support and sponsorship given to us for the very worthwhile Ataxia charity cause. Our final total was £ 3100.90

Thank you all
